The adventures of Mommy woman
Published on March 29, 2008 By JillUser In Blogging

I am feeling blue for a couple of reasons.  A) My hubby is away on business for a week (but I can't complain)

I seem to have some sort of flu or cold that has me achy and exhausted; and C) I got a very bad hair cut.

I went to the stylist with spiral permed hair that was about to the bottom of my shoulder blades.  It was almost all one length but with long layers.  I hadn't had a trim for about 3 months so it was hard to tell I had layers at all.

I told the stylist how long it had been since I had a cut since I hadn't had a sitter and had a very busy schedule.  I told her I didn't want any length taken off and just wanted my long layers and ends cleaned up.

I'm one of those people that can almost fall asleep while getting a hair cut so I wasn't paying close attention to what she was doing.  I have (had) a lot of hair so it is hard to tell anyway.  She finished by styling my hair straight.  Apparently that's the only way my hair should be done because stylists always do that even though I quite purposely get it permed.

My hair felt a lot thinner but it looked nice the way she styled it.  She was a very nice young lady and my hair looked nice at the time so I was happy and tipped her well.  When I got home and got a good look at my hair I was in tears.  I have some kind of long mullet going on!

The only spot that might apply to the "I don't want any length taken off" instruction is one thin peak in the very back and even that is a good inch and a half shorter.  The rest of my hair is pretty much bobbed at the shoulder and tapers off to that weird long peak in the back.  All my long hair is gone!

I'm so afraid my hubby will come home and hate my hair.  I'm just beside myself.  He loves my hair long and spiral permed.  I do too.

So what would you do?  I think I will go to the salon as soon as I can manage next week and talk to whomever is in charge and tell them my story.  Obviously noone can put my hair back on but maybe they can avoid doing that to anyone else.  I know this sounds silly and vain and that it's just hair, but I think most people don't  feel good about themselves when they feel their hair doesn't look good.

To put icing on the cake, I'm two weeks away from my 20th class reunion.  I am really feeling down right now.

Believe me I know the power of hair.  I have also cried over a bad haircut.  I guess the good thing is that hair grows.  I would probably get it all bobbed instead of having anything resembling "mullet-like".  I'm sure hubby will still love you even if he doesn't love the new do.  My band aid for a bad haircut is some cute shoes. Go shoe shopping tommorow.  It helps, really.

I'm still sick so I don't really feel like shopping.  I also feel like I wasted money on a terrible haircut so I would feel guilty about throwing any more money away.  I probably will get my "tail" trimmed off and just deal with having shoulder length hair until it grows out.

They can't give me my hair back but maybe I could negotiate extensions

Well, the first step is to call and ask for the owner.  Wait until you can talk to the owner and then tell them what happened and what you want them to do to make it right.  They can't get you your hair back, but if they do extentions, then they could give you your money back and give you a break on extentions to make up the difference.

Remember to tell them how much time and money (perm, coloring, etc.) that you invested into the hair that they cut off instead of giving you a trim as you instructed.  Also explain that, even though you have obviously permed hair, the stylest styled it differently to cover up the cut.

Is this where you go all the time?  If so, then you have even more clout by telling them that they need to compensate or you'll find another salon.

Good advice Karma. They aren't the salon I usually go to. I got an opportunity to have my sitter when I don't usually and noone at my salon had availability so I went to my backup, a more expensive but previously very satisfying place.

I emailed management with a request for them to contact me and set up a meeting. I feel silly and vain about being so upset about this. I even cried last night after I showered and tried to do something with this hair. I just know the only way to make it look any better is to go shorter or get extensions. I don't know anything about extensions other than they are expensive and temporary. I will be so sad to go even shorter and I know my husband will hate it.

I just feel robbed and sad right now.

Bad hair days can really change your mood. I've had them.

Karma has some good advice for you already. I hope that they do compensate you with some really good extensions or a nicer, shorter cut.

As for hubby, I hope it doesn't displease him if you get a shorter 'do. Maybe he'll go for the new style...you never know. And if he doesn't, well, tell him to go chew out the stylist, because it certainly wasn't your fault.

Sorry to hear your plight, especially before reunion time!!

I would be in there for some Shakira extension locks in a flash. I would definitely expect some sort of compensation for their flub.

Ack.

Well, summer is coming so maybe getting it cut shorter into a bob would be the way to go.  That way it will grow out evenly.

The rest of the whole mess will be resolved by time.  (Hubby coming home, hair growing out, cold passing.)  It seems like I chant "this too shall pass" a lot lately, however that is mostly related to my 2-year-old.

Hang in there!!

I've been there...probably we all have.  I know the feeling of complete embarrasment, anger and frustration.

I was going to say much of what Karma already said.  I would just add that I find it's not a good idea to just show up at a salon by not requesting somebody.  If you don't ask for a particular stylist (from word of mouth) you will be put with (most of the time) a newbie that has no clientel with a very clean schedule or maybe somebody that just shouldn't be in the business to begin with.  All the good stylists are going to have full calendars.

I remember distinctly having my very very bad cut only I knew it was bad before I left the Salon but not totally aware how bad until I got home.  She kept cutting more and more talking the whole time telling me how cute it was.  It was like she was trying to talk me into believing her.  I think she kept botching it and had to keep cutting it shorter and shorter until it was out of control for her.

When I went to work the next day my bad cut was so obvious the manager took one look at me and said "what happened to you?"

That was not a good day.   I now only go on recommendations.

I actually did make an appointment with someone that was recommended.

That would be awesome!

I just wish I had "time" before my reunion!  I'm trying to convince myself that I can look good in shorter hair.

I would definitely expect some sort of compensation for their flub.
Amen, especially since it was an upscale Spa/Salon.

I hope that they do compensate you with some really good extensions or a nicer, shorter cut.
Thanks InBloom, me too.

I just hope I can show them how heartbroken and mad this has made me.  I think if I do that well, they will definitely do what they can to make things as right as possible.  If they're jerks, I'll let them know I'll smear them all over the internet!  I am going to give the management the benefit of the doubt for now since I've had great experiences with them in the past.

on Mar 30, 2008

No way is it vain, hey it's your hair!  Good thing they are willing to fix their mistake.  It's amazing the stylist didn't noticed the tail?  I guess she did that to someone else already!   I'm sure they won't want a smear campaign so they will make it right!  Hope it turns out the way you like it!

on Mar 30, 2008

I agree with Serenity. You are not vain. Your hair is your power! or at least it feels like it sometimes. I think they will make it right. Go for the Shakira extensions!

Know the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut?  About two weeks.

Big Fat Daddy
Know the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut?  About two weeks.
Not when they take about 8 inches off!  Try several months.

Even if it was only two weeks, I've got 11 days until my reunion.

Most salons aren't open on Mondays so I don't know if I'll hear anything back today or not.  I'm hoping a manager will see me tomorrow afternoon.

Sorry...just trying to lighten the mood a touch. I understand how it can be very upsetting, especially when you need to shine your best for the old crew. Hope it works out ok for ya.

Thanks BFD.  I have an appointment with the manager this afternoon.
