The adventures of Mommy woman
On the phone anyway
Published on June 12, 2005 By JillUser In Blogging

I had a funny incident the other day.  The phone rang as I just exited the shower.  I was in a good mood and answered with a cheery "Hello?!"  The woman at the other end asked "Hi sweety, is your mommy there?"  I almost burst out laughing but had an urge to play along.

"She's not here, may I take a message?"  The woman informed me that she was calling from our lawn service and would call back later.  "When might I catch your mommy or daddy at home?" she inquired.  "They are usually home in the evening" I answered without telling a lie.  My parents are usually home during the day too since they are retired (I'm almost 35)

So I got to feel like a little girl again for a few minutes and got to avoid a call trying to get me to sign on for some new rodent/pest control service.  Put a little pep in my step.  Almost makes up for not getting carded when buying wine with my 4 and 8yr olds in tow

Hahah!  That usually happens to me when I have a cold.

Some lady called the last time I had a sore throat and asked to speak to my mommy...she didn't believe me when I said that this was MY house, and that I WAS the mommy.

I'll have to remember to play along the next time that happens...

20 years ago, sans a beard, I was in the same situation.  That is why I grew the beard!

This is a cute story! And being assumed you're younger than you really are...priceless! I got carded once and I tell ya, it does make you feel good!

I only get carded when I don't have my kids with me but boy do I smile when I do get asked for my ID

Most people either get my name wrong or call me ma'am.
They usually get my name wrong or call for the people who used to have our phone number.  Someone even keeps trying to call collect from a federal prison!

I'll have to remember to play along the next time that happens...
You really should.  It's a lot of fun!

I got carded last weekend even with having my 6 year old with me (who was bagging the groceries because she thinks it's cool...but that is a different story).  I asked the cashier: "How old do you think I was when I had my now 6 year old daughter?"  The lady looked at me, then at my daughter....and then still asked for my ID.  I think she may have been a bit slow.

We used to have people call for the people who used to have our phone number when we first moved.  Haven't had any since my husband started telling everyone that the guy was dead.  Not sure if they took him seriously, but at least they quit calling.

I had a solicitor ask if the "man of the house" was available.  I said: "yes". Then there was a silence.  They asked "well, can I talk to him?"  I said, "No...why would you want to, anyway?  All he'll do is hang up on you." (which is the truth).  I think they thought I was a teenager or something and called back three other times (had the same conversation) then they finally quit.
