This evening I took my sons to a 6:00 movie (Kicking & Screaming). The theatre was quite a sight. I have to give AMC credit that they had their act together in anticipation of the midnight showings of the final Star Wars movie. They had barracades up to form the lines for the different auditoriums, they had a grill and other refreshments availble and a large crew of overseers.
So at 6:00, a full 6hrs prior to show time, there were plenty of fans lining up. There was an impressively costumed Darth Vader having a light saber battle with a costumed Obi Wan. There was even a headless Jar-Jar (the body was on the sidewalk and the head was on a stick). The evening news was there to capture fans having light saber battles and playing Star Wars trivial pursuit games.
I never would have guessed as I was watching Star Wars at the drive-in theatre from the back of a Mercury Capri that a couple decades later it would come to this. I must admit that is pretty cool to have kids feel jealous that I remember when it all began. On the other hand, it makes me feel a bit old. It is fun to have kids as an excuse to play with the Star Wars Legos though
To those waiting in lines right now, the grown up in me thinks you're crazy and the kid in me is jealous that you are having fun mingling with other SW fans while I am at home tucking little ones in for the night. May the force be with you and may it help you keep from telling me any spoilers! "Putting hands over ears while saying la-la-la-laaa! I can't hear you!"
