As hobbies go, I personally think scrapbooking is one of the most useful. I have a friend who is a Creative Memories consultant who turned me on to scrapbooking a few years back and I love it! My kids, friends and family love the results too.
I have always enjoyed photos even if they are of people I don't know. I simply find people fascinating. So when I was invited to a scrapbooking party by my friend, I figured I would go even if it was just to look at other peoples' pictures. I soon found out it is a good creative outlet as well as social.
I mostly work on my scrapbooks alone in the few spare moments I grab here and there. Once in a great while I get the opportunity to scrapbook in a group and that is so much fun. You get to see other peoples' lives layed out in a creative fashion. You get ideas for your own scrapbooks also.
One thing that really got me going on the idea of scrapbooking was when my husband's grandmother gave me a box of old family photos. Hardly anyone looks at them or even knows they exist. There is so much history and family information there that I found it a shame and started making copies, restoring some of the pictures and even finding a subject to zoom in on in a picture which creates something completely different (example: noone thought there were any pictures of a certain family member but I found a picture that was mostly of a bridge but this person was a little part of the foreground. I zoomed in on her and made it a good picture of just her).
I have kids so I have an infinite source of scrapbooking material. They love looking at their picture albums and I have found that some of their favorites are of every day things rather than the big vacations or other big events that they already remember pretty well. One of my older son's favorites is a picture of him in mid puddle jump. It is raining but the grass is bright green and he is decked out in his bright yellow raincoat and rain boots. Jumping in a puddle is the equivalent of pure joy to a little boy and that is why I think he loves that picture.
So, scrapbooking to me means sharing history, enjoying the past, being creative, and interacting socially with the friends and family who have an appreciation for the same. It is a hobby that creates something special to be passed down forever more. I highly recommend it!
