The adventures of Mommy woman
That is if you don't get out of the way

I really hate people who don't get the hell out of the way when emergency vehicles are trying to get through!  Something bad was going on today because I was in a parking lot and saw half a dozen emergency vehicles go by.  Now I know that sometimes you can't hear a siren until it gets up close but once you hear one siren, you should get your head out of your ass and be alert for others.  This didn't seem to happen with the idiots on the road today.

A couple of vehicles were the cause of several of the fire trucks and ambulances having to come to a complete stop to get through the same intersection.  What idiots!  I say the EMS driver should be able to plow over the asshats!  Why should someone else die waiting for help due to your complete idiocy?!

I say, if the siren is on, the horn gets blown as a warning, you don't get as far out of the way as possible, you are fair game.  You can then wait for the EMS to get to you so you can see what it is like.  These people are right up there with the scumbags that don't stop for school buses.  No respect for others' well being!  I just can't stand that!

Sorry, that was a bit of a rant.

I do agree with you in theory, but in practice the emergency people would end up making a bigger mess if they did this. Maybe a fine if you don't get out of the way quick enough?

Timely!  Unfortunately, here we just had the opposite.  A delivery truck bowled over a fire truck!  happened this morning in the east end.  No one was killed, TG.

Good rant tho.

Reinforcement is the problem with things like that.  It is highly illegal to not stop for a school bus too but I have seen it a million times and have never seen a person punished unless they actually run a kid over.

How horrible!

The problem is that require hearing. I once accidentally slowed down an emergency van, my mirror was in tinted mode and of course, I couldn't hear them. I moved very fast out of way as soon as I noticed the alternating brightness headlights.

Otherwise I agree! I have seen other drivers like that.

As a former Army EMT (91B) I can tell you....more emergency vehicles are involved in a crash at intersections because of idiots who ignore the lights and siren. So please, if you see one emercency vehicle go through the intersection in front of you...remember, they usually come in groups. Don't just fly through the light after one goes by!

They should lose their licenses.

I don't think you qualify for what I was ranting about.  I realize sometimes it is hard to notice the first emergency vehicle (especially if you can't hear) but once one goes by, you better sit there and make sure no more are coming!

That is exactly what prompted this rant.  Like I said, there were half a dozen and the idiots just kept pulling right back out into the intersection.

To tell you the truth, many of us in EMS have pretty much stopped using lights and sirens on highways. Because of current emergency vehicle operation laws, we really aren't allowed to go much more than 10mph over the speed limit. Also, with so few drivers reacting correctly to our sirens, it has become more of a danger than efficient.

Thanks for the inspiration, I'll have to make this the topic of a satire sometime.

Around here, the local paper has a column every wednesday with police reports of arrests. Not a wednesday goes by that at least one person is arrested or ticketed for "failure to yield for an emergency vehicle." This always brings a smile to my face. At least the police are following up!

I wish it were possible to do without creating more casualties for the EMT's to pick up!

That is worthy a rant. I have noticed similiar events. I usually ensure that there's nothing happening before I go out driving again.

Always happy to contribute to satire

Glad to hear it because it sure doesn't happen around here.
