The adventures of Mommy woman
Well, Round One anyway
Published on November 30, 2004 By JillUser In Home & Family

I have been battling our 12 ft. artificial Christmas tree and am conceding round one.  I got all of the segments up from the basement, identified and got the base, skirt and bottom two segments assembled in place.  The third segment is at just the right level that I have to get the ladder.  I tried standing on a chair but it is so high, heavy and awkward that the attempt ended in a lot of cussing and back pain.

My hands and arms are all scratched up and I am trying for the life of me to remember how the heck I did this last year.  I am resting, having a beverage and snack and am going to get the ladder and some gloves and get back in the fight.  I really want to have it all ready to decorate this evening.

Wish me luck!

Try the Tom Cruise approach ala Mission Impossible.  Get yourself a harness and some cable and lower yourself down from the ceiling.  That should do the trick!

Trying to envision Jill all harnessed up.......

I have the battle of the tree every year.  This year all the pieces were there, but the instruction manual was missing so I had to eye up the segments and decide which went where.

It's up, though....and decorated, and looking pretty decent this year....if the dang dog woud just leave it alone.....

I am so glad I don't need to bother with a tree. Oh the joys of Pagan "religions" !!

he heh........aren't you glad you went the easy route, and got an artificial tree? although granted, at twelve feet no tree, real or otherwise would be very easy or cheap. Good luck and merry christmas!

Thanks Jill - I have that song in my head now! I fought the tree and the tree won, I fought the tree and the tree won *sigh* I hope your hands and arms are feeling better now

This year, I've decided that I'm putting some lights on my banana tree and having cocktails with little unbrellas for my holiday celebrations!
on Nov 30, 2004

I avoid that by "letting" my husband assemble it.  Of course, my tree isn't big enough to take over the world, so it's not that big of an issue, anyway

I wish I had a 12 foot tree.....and a house big enough for it! Our 71/2 foot tree pretty much fills up the living room. Whe have to turn sideways to get past it to go down the hall. We could probably get a bigger one in here if we got rid of the furniture....and as tempting as that is.....my husband would nix that idea.

Post a photo when it's all done!

Laughed my butt off picturing that!  Thanks T-man!

Funny you should say that because it turned out my problem was one segment was marked wrong and I didn't realize I was trying to stick a bigger one on a smaller one until I succeeded and could see how ridiculous it looked.  I then did a whole lot of swearing, took it apart and put it back together correctly.  It is quite beautiful now and all the lights worked!

Indeed!

I always do the tree myself so a real one just isn't an option.  That and I really don't have fond memories of getting pine needles stuck in my feet growing up with real ones.

Not so much but thanks for asking.  I have so many scratches on my hands that I think I will slather them with A&D ointment and put cotton gloves on for the night.

Sounds great LL!

Mine is trying.  We have 22 ft ceiling in our living room though so it looks right at home.

Oh joy, it's that time of the year again. The good thing about putting up our tree, and it's a large artificial one ( the problems w/the real ones are just too much in an apt.), is that the kids are older now, at least two of them, so they do all the stretching and bending for me - oh joy! Good luck Jill.

Jill,

I would feel sorry for you, but I am still to green with envy over the 12' tree. We have a puny 6' tree.

Hope your arms and hands get better soon.

Tree Envy? Kole and I have won by neglect... we still have our tree up from last year. Granted, it is a small table top tree. We took the Christmas decorations off of it last January, but she wanted to hang up her school projects on it during the year. Right now, it is decorated an odd missmash of science projects, art attacks, and pictures. Bizarre? Yeah, but she and I both like it... I almost don't want to pull out the Christmas stuff now!

That is neat!  At least you kept it up to enjoy it.  I have an aunt who was so lazy she would just throw a sheet over her tree and stick it in her spare room all year.

About 10 years ago, my dad left the tree up until Valentine's Day. It became a contest to see who could outlast the tree.....i finally broke down and packed it up myself!
