The adventures of Mommy woman
If you find it, send it back please

Maybe some of you out there will relate to my problem.  It is a mystery to me how self motivation comes and goes.  Some mornings I will wake up ready to tackle the day.  Others, like today, the day seems to be tackling me.

I am a procrastinator.  Usually I get a whole lot of energy at the 11th hour and get stuff done that needs to be done.  I am hoping this will continue to be true.  I really need to get a whole lot of house work done before the weekend.  All I have managed so far today is laundry.  Five loads so far.

I think I am feeling overwhelmed.  I am having a difficult time finding a way to focus and get organized.  I just don't know where to start.  I'm feeling easily distracted and generally unmotivated.  I need a kick in the butt!

Now I only have an hour and a half before I have to go pick kids up at the school.  If I don't get "something" done before then, I will feel like I wasted the day.  I can't afford that mentally so I will have to get off this computer and go do "something".   Wish me luck and send some motivation my way...please!

Go Jill, go!

I am in the same situation as you are at this very moment. I need to get away from the keyboard, get in the car and go home and clean. I have only a week or so left before I start my new job, and had planned on getting rid of a lot of outgrown clothing of Kole's, re-organizing old school stuff, filing income tax stuff, and all sorts of other 'home' related chores to do. Do you think I have done any of it? I really feel I need some sort of support system going. Encouragement from people who know how I feel. A bit of accountability involved. Here's my plan. I won't blog until some major tasks are completed.

You won't hear from me until I've accomplished something. I'll blog back, (if you don't mind!) hopefully, sometime tomorrow with a report that I have done something useful for once!

Here I go! And I will send good vibes to you and wish you well, too!
Nic.

Thanks Nic and right back at ya!

At work, I make lists of what I need to get done, but that doesn't work as well for my long term projects that have little spurts of activity.

At home, I avoid all that by just not doing anything unless it falls on me.

I'm having the same problem.  I can't settle to anything - I can't focus and concentrate on one thing.  It seems that there are so many things that need to be done, and I either don't know where to start (so I don't start at all) or I start one thing and then see that something else is more pressing, so I drop what I was doing and go start something else..leaving a heap of unfinished projects in my wake.  Today I'm trying to do laundry and clean the boy's room (It's a pigsty, I looked in there this morning and I couldn't see the carpet for toys and dirty socks...that's what happens when I take a sick day like I did Sunday and part of yesterday)

Anyway, I'll try and project some good motivation vibes your way this afternoon.....hope they help!

Wow, We must be having the same type of day... I can't seem to finish what I start today.

I list at work, like KarmaGirl, but I do it at home too. What works really well for me is to take a whole line item like: Clean Kitchen, and break into several smaller bullets.

Clean Kitchen:
1. Load dishwasher
2. Wipe out sinks
3. Wipe down counters
4. Sweep floor
5. Mop floor

That may seem excessive (uh, yeah, it is) but it really works! That way even if you don't get the whole kitchen clean, you've done SOMETHING and you can hold your list up and say "See what I did"

Even that small feeling of accomplishment can snowball as you get more and more checked off the list.

It's the theory of expectations. If you keep 'em low, you're less likely to be disappointed!

Glad to hear I'm not alone in my plight.  I do make lists.  I usually sit down with my coffee in the morning and write down what needs to be done and a time frame.  I made a list, does that count as accomplishing something?

I did get about 8 loads of laundry done (stripped beds today), did a bunch of weeding, gathered garbage, put things away here and there.  I need to force myself to do it room by room I think.  I will leave floors for last.  There, I have a plan!

Lowered expectations, I like that approach!

I can definitely relate to this today.....a week from today, we have family coming into town for my oldest's high school graduation. That means the entire house needs to be cleaned, top to bottom, between now and then, and I just don't feel like doing it! I know that if I just break it down and concentrate on one room at a time, I'll be fine....but right now, looking at the big picture, I would much rather just crawl back into bed, pull the covers over my head, and sleep!!

making lists helps me... having clear set goals helps too...

oh, and delaying gratification is paramount.  Tell yourself that you're not allowed to log onto JoeU until "X" is done, and you'll have more motivation to get it done.  If you log on first thing in the morning when you first get up, then it's like eating dessert first... You won't be hungry enough to eat the healthy stuff...

I have problems with motivation too.  I think it's normal to a certain extent.  That's why it's so important to have goals and standards, which I'm sure you have.
