How to End a Skit Gone Awry
Published on May 13, 2004 By JillUser In Entertainment

Sir Pete's blog about Monty Python got me thinking about my youth and watching The Flying Circus.  I loved the clever way they would end a bit that they really didn't know how to end.  Someone would just say something like "Stop that!  That's too silly!" and then the old "And now for something completely different."

I haven't watched SNL much lately because they seem to have the habit of including skits that just go on and on with no good way of ending.  They seem to have a funny concept but just get too drug out.  It ends up not being funny at all.  They need to take a lesson or two from the great minds of Monty Python!

And that's all I have to say about that

Alot of the Python works have been edited by me, most notably The Life of Brian. I keep in close contact with the chaps, especially Terry Jones. I also helped Terry on his BBC2 series 'Terry Jones's Medieval Lives' as I am quite the historian!

I think that the Flying Circus pioneered television sketch comedy, leading to the development of "SNL" in the States.

It is quite unfortunate that SNL goes back to the same jokes week after week, and lets the one-joke sketches run on and on.

I think that the reason for all of this is that they have ninety minutes to fill each episode.  There are only so many "winners" that the writers can come up with for each show.
