Planning Vacation to South Padre

I am hoping to pick your brains. I am attempting to plan a family vacation to South Padre. My hubby has great memories of the place growing up. I have never been there and need some tips on where to stay and what to do.
We are into creature comforts so want to stay at a really nice hotel on the beach. I think gulf side is where to be. So far the Sheraton looks pretty nice. Any thoughts?
Also, tips on places to eat and fun family things to do would be greatly appreciated. I saw they have dolphin cruises. Anyone ever do that? Sounded like fun for the whole family. Our youngest is 3 so it might be a challenge to find stuff other than beach bumming

The Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington...both are pretty cool.
Never did the Dolphin tour but have heard good things about it. There is a really nice hotel on Ocean Dr. that gives a great military discount (or did last year) 100 bucks off! nice rooms too. I will have to ask hubby which one..I have slept since then and do not
remember!
It's right on the water, is close to downtown and to the attractions I listed. (it is not on the island though)

I like Galveston's Moody Gardens -- It's more north but SO worth the trip. I never much cared for Padre. Galveston is so lovely.
