The adventures of Mommy woman

I grew up just South of the U.P. of MI.  I saw a lot of snow and crazy ice storms growing up.  Last weekend I experienced something that not only I but my parents had never seen in all their years, Thunder Snow.

We were right by Lake Michigan and kept hearing forecasts of 5-9 inches of snow for that evening.  That really wasn't a surprise since we were used to getting snow storms at any time especially this time of year.  That night got really weird though.

I was at the hospital visiting my friend.  It got reall dark at about 5PM but I could see it spitting rain a little by the light of the street lights.  Every hour I looked out and at about 7 it started a light dusting of snow.  At 8 we saw a huge flash of lightening and that's when the "Thunder Snow" began.

It was like a thunder and lightening storm but instead of rain it provided us with the biggest, wettest glops of snow I ever saw.  It came down fast and furiously and mixed with the darkness, provided absolutely no visibility.  I experienced some of the most white knuckled driving I had ever done.

The trip from my grandma's house to the hospital took 20 mins.  The trip back took an hour!  I didn't go over 20mph the whole way.  Weird!

Probably the same storm system that Mason saw the Thunder snow.  The first time I saw it, it was just after Thanksgiving in 74.  I was on the Penn Turnpike just outside of Pittsburg headed back to U Dayton.

The last time was about 2 years go, right here in Richmond.  It is neat!

I saw the same thing in South Dakota in March of 2000.  It had started to snow overnight, and when I got up that morning it was coming down hard with thunder and lightning to boot.  I called the local news station's weatherman, and asked him if this was normal.  He did a broadcast a few hours later and mentioned that whilst it was rare it wasn't unheard of - he called it a 'snunder storm'.

We ended up with 4' of wet, heavy snow when it finally stopped snowing on Tuesday.  The schools were closed for 3 days, and even AF personnel were told not to report until Wednesday when the plows had finally managed to clear the main roads.

It's certainly a memorable experience.

Absolutely!

It is neat!
Not exactly what I was thinking while trying to drive in it
