The adventures of Mommy woman

I am a former band "fag", "geek", "insert insult here". I haven't played since I left high school. I played some scales on my tarnished old flute last night and not only was I surprised I still could, but my boys were ecstatic! They said "Mommy, we didn't know you could do that!" Mommy has hidden talents

So I ordered some Christmas music from flutestop.com and might try to impress them with some Christmas solos. I would love to play with an orchestra some day. Not a big one, something small, not too expensive....sorry wandered off onto a Monty Python quote there.

In school I played in every band imaginable. Jazz (tenor sax), concert band (flute) and marching band (flute). I would have to say jazz was the most fun although we sucked. I went to a very small school (88 in my graduating class) so we had to where a lot of hats. I think we did pretty well for such a small group. We had some pretty embarassing moments in marching band. We went to a state marching exhibition and performed right after the biggest school in the state (who was the genious with that idea?!) Our band instructor new we couldn't seriously compare so he had us play "Wipe Out" dressed in shorts and hawaiian shirts acting like we were surfing while we played...oh the shame. The other big embarassment that sticks out is one Holiday parade where our instruments froze shut so we played Jingle Bells on kazoos.....oy!

Good for you! I refurbished my flute last year and gave it to my 12 year old as part of her Christmas present. She's been taking lessons for almost a year now and is showing such lovely talent. And I'm so impressed that I can still play too! (I started on flute, then did a bizarre switch to French horn...)

and I'm proud to have been a band geek!

French horn?! That is quite a bizarre switch. I never had the chops for brass. Flute to sax was easy. I actually had a short stint on oboe in 6th grade so had a little experience with reeds. Sax is an easier reed than oboe and the fingering on all three is pretty similar. My best friend played clarinet. We did well with a duet at state competitions but I did best solo (2nd in state at Interlochen).

I have boys so it isn't likely I will be passing my flute down. Maybe one of them will play sax though! Drama and band were my main passions in high school. Now I have to use JoeUser to channel my artistic side

How much, if you don't mind me asking, did it cost to have it refurbished?

I never did learn how to read music. I learned enough about it for my voice lessons, but never could play an instrument well. However, I always get a kick out of my daughter listening to me sing. I have a very low voice, but I sing soprano. She always asks me "how do you get that other voice to sing with?" She'll understand it one of these days LOL
