The adventures of Mommy woman
Messed Up Priorities
Published on March 12, 2004 By JillUser In Blogging
There has been a lot of talk about the rules and regulations regarding food stamps. A lot of us seem to experience the same observation, these women tend to have beautiful nails! *Notice I didn't say they all have* I would love to have beautiful nails. I don't. You know why? I don't have the time because I am taking care of my home and family!

Before children, I would get acrylic nails because I have a hard time growing my own. It is expensive and very time intensive. You have to sit there for at least an hour every week to two weeks. You have to make it a priority. Once I had kids, it simply wasn't a priority anymore.

I am wondering A)How do these women afford it? and B)Why is it they have time to sit on their butts getting their nails done?

I am sure I will get the "They deserve to feel normal too" argument. Manicures are another luxury item. Not a necessity at all! Designer clothes and coiffed hair, more luxuries. Seem to see a lot of those accompanying food stamps too.

Even seeing an example of this once (which I have seen much more than that) is enough to make you feel a bit bitter about paying for these peoples' groceries. People who deserve the assistance can feel defensive about people citing these instances, but it is one of those frustrating flaws in the system. I have so much respect for the woman with the calculator and pile of coupons in tote as she shops. She plans out a list, estimates the cost and sticks to her plan. I can't say I have ever seen a food stamp user ever reference a list or use a coupon. That is just my experience though.

Another thing I can't figure out is the cell phones. How is it they have cell phones too? Example I saw yesterday, leather coat, designer glasses, manicured nails, talking on the cell while yelling at 3 kids to stay out of the candy. All 3 kids had new sneakers, designer clothes and new coats.

I'm all for helping the needy. I am all for seeing kids get the nourishment and clothing they need. I am not for paying for luxuries I don't even have for myself or my family. My family is buying sneakers from Pay-Less and they are wearing Nikes. That just isn't right.

I am not sure how we are going to get there, but I think somehow our society needs to return to the times when people were proud to make the best of what they could with what they had. They would do anything they could to avoid hand outs. Anyone who doesn't believe that government assistance is a handout is fooling themselves. It used to be people were fine working their way up. Now any job other than the top is beneath them. Why work for less than you can make getting assistance? I'll tell you why, you can start a work record and work toward better jobs. Gain experience. Learn new things. Do for yourself and see how rewarding it is. That is how I was raised and it has worked out pretty well so far.

You seem so angry at someone you don't even know , and don't know their story. YOU dream it up yourself , and you know what they say about people who assume.

So, the people I see daily, the people who I saw daily, who I got to know, who I had conversations with...I'm assuming things about them?  I don't think so.  I think that you're assuming things about me, and I think that's a bad idea.  I can assure you that what I've seen and had knowledge of wasn't dreamt up by anyone.  And yes, I am mad.  I'm pissed off about it.  I think i have every right to be pissed off about the blatant manipulation that i saw.

When I say we are talking pennies here , it seems you don't even understand where your taxes go.

Umm, yes I do understand where my taxes go.  I'm not an idiot, so please don't speak to me like I am.

Oh, and I don't know how many times I have to say this, but:

I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH GIVING PEOPLE A LITTLE HELP WHEN THEY NEED IT.  I THINK THAT IT'S WONDERFUL TO SEE PEOPLE GET A HELPING HAND AND THEN GO ON TO LEAD PRODUCTIVE LIVES.  THAT'S WHY I'M HELPING GIDEON, AND WHY I HAVE HELPED AND WILL CONTINUE TO HELP PEOPLE IF THEY NEED IT.  WHAT I DO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IS PEOPLE MILKING THE SYSTEM FOR ALL IT'S WORTH, AND THEN GOING BACK FOR MORE.

How can I be any plainer?

Hey , since we're doing budget recipes - this is really good kinda like Karma's

1 package Kraft macaroni and cheese , prepare as shown , drain, add the cheese packet , margarine and milk given on the box ,

Add one reg can of cream of mushroom soup , one can tuna ( albacore is best ),

mix , and place in a baking dish under the broiler - just until top turns toasty brown.

Serve with veggie on the side. It's tasty...

Ha!  I have the attitude problem, huh?  Whatever.  Sure I do.  Whatever you say.

Care to explain the 'everything else' a little further?  That interests me.

Another budget recipe tip....one package of your favorite stir fry vegetables, add ramen noodles (either uncooked or cook them in, depending on how you prefer them), served over rice.

A favorite of the kids' is bean burgers...1 can pork and beans mixed with 1 lb ground meat...served like sloppy joes.

To say that cheating is impossible is just retarded. I know PLENTY of cheats, its called "working under the table" or "daddy has left us" (when he hasnt, and is working under the table as well) its called "im working 50 hours per week so i use that much free daycare" (when shes working 20 hours, but on commission only so no time cards are kept.)

little,

The problem is, those of us who won't steal (which is basically what this is) get left out in the cold because of those who will and do. When welfare reform was proposed, nobody envisioned totally yanking the safety nets out from under the people who needed them, which is what happened. You can give me all the food stamps you want, I can't pay rent with food stamps (well, technically, I could...but then you get back into "stealing", regardless of what you wish to call it).

When we are displaced, however, the fairly high amount of food stamps will come in handy, as we'll have to buy perishables shortly before using them...no electricity means no fridge.

When we are displaced, however,

but that shouldn't have to be the case, Gideon.  You shouldn't be getting displaced.  You and yours are in the kind of circumstance the welfare system was designed to help out with.  You're supposed to have a safety net.  You're supposed to have a place to go to for help when you've exhausted every other possibility, and you're getting nothing from them.  I wish to god that there was something more dave and I could do...I wish that I had money and the power to find you a job up here and pay for you to relocate.  Unfortunately, I don't, or I'd have done it by now.

Don't give up just yet, I know I haven't (and I won't.)

Bwhahahahaah!  That's hilarious!!!!  haha!  That shows how little you know about me and mine.

If you knew me, you would know that I could give a rats behind about name brands, and I'm happier shopping at yard sales.  Perhaps you should go read my blog before you start assuming things about me.

It pisses me off that people who are content to find reasons to stay on welfare get better treatment than the service men and women who are putting their lives at risk to protect the way of life in this country.  I'm not resentful of anything.  I'm pissed off.  Big difference.

 Oh, and it's Dhar- MA.

Gideon ,

Where you live , do they have a "Manpower" office or something like it that hires people on a day to day basis?
Where you live , do they have a "general assistance " that can be used in emergencies?
Are there any Churches, newspapers , etc. who have emergency funding for anything you may need.
Are there any Churches, schools who could be nudged into having a huge " Garage sale " with donations benefiting your cause?
Is there any way to place a sense of ugency into anyone you've already contacted? As in , the squeaky wheel gets the grease?
Is there any talent , skill or background that you could use to get help?
Are you knocking on as many doors as you can to find work / help ?
Posting here alot will take up much time - can you use it ( your time ) better? Time Management.
Finally , when there is a need , I don't know how big the need is ( I haven't read all about your plight ) don't laugh,

There's Oprah Winfrey's "Angel Network " Well , they just bought a house for a wonderful woman , and gave her thousands more for repairs and thousands more
in appliances and games etc for her " kids "

Stretch your brain - there's got to be something that you can do !

Well dharma,

Congratulations for finding the perfect scapegoat. Probably a tenth of one percent of the poulation really ticks you off. You must be proud.

Unfortunately, some of these people ( who often get very little money ) DON'T have it better off than the Military.
They live in "projects" where gunfire at all times of the day are the norm. The kids can't play anywhere , and many children are killed by gunfire through their windows.
No one dares testify when they see a murder, for they will be next if they do.

They get killed if they are wearing the wrong color of shirt. Just kids coming home from school. Every day , all day.
Some man told a woman - oh baby I love you , makes her pregnant , and then leaves ( or is killed ). She has a child to raise , if they make it.
Nobody will hire her, and she has this child. If she's not bright enough to figure it out , what's the alternative?

Several weks ago , an 18 year old football star , just on his way to college, was shot to death by ( alledgedly ) a 15 year old , over something that was said.
Yes, there's a war going on , and it's NOT only in Iraq , and it's not killing only 18 - 24 year olds, it's killing 3, 5 and 12 year olds.

Oh Boo hoo on your little predjudices. Perhaps someday that will be you with the food stamps, and if someone looks at you askew, you may remember little dharma,
the rageoholic , so quick to judge. I hope not , but life is like that.
