My 3rd grade son Alex went to a "slumber" party last night. I have never seen that kid that tired in his life! Apparently the other boys were pulling pranks on the ones who fell asleep so Alex refused to give them the chance to pull anything on him. He was not a happy camper when I picked him up at noon.
He is one of those kids, like most of us, who gets very wobbly and clumsy when they are over tired. Apparently the boys all went outside to play after breakfast and Alex jumped on a big ball, rolled off, flipped himself upside down and crashed into the playscape. This caused him to cry which is very uncool when you are 9. He was seriously upset with himself when I got there.
He was exhausted, embarrassed and afraid his friends now thought he was a baby for crying. I tried to comfort him and told him his friends all looked dead tired too and probably wouldn't even remember what happened to him. He wouldn't hear any of it. He was what we refer to as "out of his mind".
I got the poor kid in the house and he made it as far as the couch before he was snoring. We could have set a bomb off next to him and he wouldn't have woken up! Three hours later we started trying to wake him up because I feared he would sleep too much then not get to sleep tonight. Not to mention his little brother was dying to play with him.
He reacted as if he were stoned out of his mind. He didn't have much control over his eyelids and rolled around on the floor after tumbling off the couch. It took a good half hour to get him back in the land of the living.
He's had dinner and has been playing with Ryan. They both sound pretty wired now....yay! I am hoping a warm bath and a little wind down time will chill them out in time to get to bed at a reasonable hour. I am hoping he doesn't get invited to another "slumber" party for a while!
