The adventures of Mommy woman
Cereal makes you hungry!
Published on March 16, 2004 By JillUser In Diet
I thought I would share this with my fellow carboholics. I recently changed my way of eating drastically. I am a person that loves a cup of coffee and something sweet for breakfast. Not a big breakfast eater. The thought of eggs for breakfast didn't sound great to me but when I was told that up to 6 eggs a week was quite healthy and if I ate an egg for breakfast I would find I was less hungry and would burn more fat and less muscle, I figured I would try it out.

I alternate an egg breakfast with a low fat cheese breakfast and am not hungry until well into the lunch hour. I am losing some weight but have seen a much more instant change in the way my clothes are fitting. I don't crave sweets like I did before either. An egg, toasted light bread and an orange (not juice) seem to be the perfect breakfast for me.

I found that I was eating way too many starches and sweets and not enough fruits, veggies and proteins. I am now eating less fat and calories and am much less hungry than before. I still have my coffee but switched from cream to skim milk. I don't eat sandwichs (too much bread and I would tend to put mayo on them) and don't cook with butter or oil. Hopefully I will see a big payoff come Summer but it has got to be helping my health no matter what.

Eggs are for anytime, not just breakfast.
I've been trying to change my diet too, and it's pretty much the same thing that you've been doing. I've found that, with my daughter, we were spending a bit of money on treats that were pretty high in sugar, and while she's not overweight, we both seem to be doing much better with more of a focus on fresh veggies and whole fruit (not just juice).
I try not to weigh myself at all, but have gone down a size in clothing, which is great. I also think that our switch from juice to water has made a great difference... I didn't realize how much juice we drank after missing the recycling day in a period of two weeks. The hardest change that I've found is the coffee thing. It's hard for me to contemplate switching cream to skim milk. I have gone down from 2 teaspoons to 1/2 a teaspoon. My sister came by with my usual order of 2 sugars, and I almost gagged from the sweetness of it.
Good luck in trying to be healthy!

I love eggs scrambled up with veggies...I was like you and didn't eat a big breakfast, but it sure does sustain you a whole lot better until lunch and no sugar crashes.
Stick with it.....and live long....!

I have switch toast or croissant with jam breafast to simple fruit juice, and I really feel less hungry. I'm eager to lunchtime but nothing compare to the 10 oclock hunger I used to have. Suger is so addictive... it shoul be banned

Sounds like you are on the South Beach Diet or a variant of it. I followed that diet for the 1st 2 phases and found that I lost 15 pounds and one pant size.

I have since gone of the diet completely but have made the following more or less permanent changes:

No white bread -- only whole wheat, dark rye, and oat bran based breads.
No sugar added to anything
Almost no candy - I have found that if I allow myself some really high quality ($20+ /lb.) dark chocolate covered almonds, it statisifies my sweet tooth for a few days. (I limit myself to 1-3 clusters at a time, and allow for time to ENJOY them)

As for breakfast, I am now usually having Egg Beaters with some lowfat swiss cheese and veggies, or irish steel cut oatmeal (30 minutes to cook!)

The other lifestyle change is making sure you have enough veggies on hand to make little veggie snack bags. I typically cut:

cucumbers
bell peppers
celery
cherry tomatoes
brocolli

and other veggies so I have a bag of snacks that are healthy and filling.

It is also amazing just how much added sugar, processed flour, and partially-hydrogenated oils are in so many "everyday" products.

As for coffee there is no way I would give that up, but I weaned myself from milk and sugar two years ago and now enjoy it black.

I like eggs benedict for breakfast if i'm feeling really decadent...otherwise a soft-boiled egg and sourdough toast 'soldiers' to dip in it is my breakfast of choice.

I lost 40 lbs last year, and 8 pant sizes. I just didn't eat. I had some stuff happen, I lost my appetite, and the weight just came off. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone tho....I nicknamed it the 'caffiene and nicotine' diet because I think that all I lived on for a while was java and smokes.

I can't give up coffee, but I did start drinking it black with half the sugar I used to put in it.

I can't/won't give up coffee. I tried black but can only handle it if it is flavored coffee.

dharmagrl, 40lbs?! That is fantastic! That is about what I need to lose. I am sticking with it. I am not thinking of it as a diet because I know I can never "go off it" or I will be destined to fit in my fat pants again. Been there, done that.

jmp, sounds like you have one healthy lifestyle! Eve your treat of choice is healthy since you get protein from the nuts and dark chocolate is good for you also.

NickyG, I agree that eggs are for any time but don't eat too many per week. Scrambled eggs and toast is a filling, cheap meal for any time. Juice to water makes a huge difference! Matter of fact, just drinking more water makes a huge difference.

Already my nails are healthier, skin is healthier, pants are looser and I have more energy. I read that smoking and obesity account for pretty much all of the preventable deaths outside of accidents. I don't smoke so losing the weight will make it so I am doing everything I can to stay as healthy as I can. I love my life and family. I want to enjoy them for as long as possible.

I love to see people doing well with their health ventures, i truly believe that maintaining a healthy diet is very challenging, but has a huge payoff if you do one particular thing.  BE CONSISTENT! Once you learn the do's and do not's of a particular diet whether it be Atkis, south beach, Jenny Craig, or whatever other flavor there is out there, the next step is to be consistent.

I think the first 2-4 weeks of a diet is the hardest especially for those "Carboholics" because you are lowering your blood sugar level and getting rid of those Carb Cravings.  But let me tell ya, if you truly get through those 2-4 weeks, you regularlize your blood sugar level and truly can control yourself with the cravings.

So the moral of my story is be consistent, if there are things that you cannot live without, then try to either reduce the intake, or change some of the additives you add to that "Can't Live Without Thing" whether it be coffee or whatever.

I am a total Carboholic but you are right King, couple of weeks into it I stopped having the cravings. The only thing I don't feel it is worth giving up is coffee. You are right again that being consistent is key. If you make even the smallest change like not using mayo or using fat free dressings and you do it consistently, you will see results.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I like what you do, continue this way.
